In December, we will have a unit in Beit Midrash on different approaches to Jewish Halacha.
What is Halacha (frequently translated as Jewish law)? How do different Jewish communities approach Halacha? Join Ratzon’s Beit Midrash for a multi-week program exploring the diverse and beautiful ways Jews connect with Halacha. During this course, we will not seek to find one “right” way of approaching Halacha. Instead, we will hear from a diverse array of speakers sharing their perspectives on what Halacha means to them, and at the end have the opportunity to reflect on and articulate what Halacha means to us, personally, as well as communally.
Thursdays at 6:30-8PM ET on Zoom
December 1: Rabbi Mike Moskowitz, an Orthodox LGBT+ advocate, will share his perspectives on how Orthodox halacha can support LGBT+ people.
October 8: Community member Sara Chandler will lead a discussion about her experiences in the Reconstructionist movement and Reconstructionist approaches to halacha.
December 15: Community member Tzipora Simone will facilitate a conversation around her relationship with halacha as a Sefardi person.
December 22: No Beit Midrash, but we are having a Channukah party! Come join us! :)
December 29: Roni Sosis, Ratzon's programs coordinator, will lead a converstation around Modern Orthodox and traditional egalitarian halachic approaches, and lead a closing discussion around our own relationships with Halacha and Ratzon's communal relationship with halacha.
This series is free. This series will be held via Zoom. You will be sent the zoom link after you register.
Ratzon's Beit Midrash is an egalitarian Jewish study hall. We have a variety of different learning opportunities.
We have hosted guest teachers for intensive Talmud study, had community members facilitate sessions on topics of their interest (including the 6 genders mentioned in the Talmud), a unit on Shabbat, and a unit on mutual aid.
Currently, Beit Midrash happens from 6:30-8pm eastern time on Thursday evenings. The program happens in person with a hybrid option. Sign up below if you'd like to join us!
Below is the usual signup link for Beit Midrash, when we are not running a special unit. Send us an email if you need to cancel your registration.
